David Hockney

I have been looking at work of David Hockney, adn I am interested in the different techniques he uses to create his peices of work.  I am very interested in the way that Hockney uses several different canvases for one painting, creating several individual paintings that come together to create one painting, or videos, which is something that he has experimenting with.  After looking at Hockney techniques I would like to do something along the same lines of this, using moving image and documentary.  I want to be able to create a peice of moving image that can be viewed at several different peices, and put toghether to create a larger peice of moving image.

Final Major Project Research

As I have my final major project idea I have been doing some research to help influence what my final piece of moving image will look like.  I have been looking at band profile on location.  The videos as follows are influencing my current ideas.

I am going to take the concept of the vidoes above to create an on location band profile, but the techniques used from the last video (split screens) to produce a documentary with aspects of experimental film within it.

Final Major Project Proposal

Prior to final major project I have developed many skills that will benefit the production of my multi-camera band profile such as concepts and ideas.  I have gained experience behind the camera, directing, lighting and editing by working on several films in previous stages, including, experimental filmmaking and multi-camera studio sessions.  I will use editing techniques developed from previous briefs, and develop my ideas as I go along, overcoming any challenges that I may face during the process.

My idea is to create a documentary based around a band, which will include performance, observational shots and possibly an interview.  I am going to combine documentary and aspects of experimental film together to create my multi-camera band profile.  This will require a full understanding of documentary and the different genres, as well as an understanding of experimental filmmakers that are going to influence my film, and why they will benefit my work.

I will continue to look at filmmakers and practitioners that have influenced my work so far, as well as more filmmakers and documentary makers along the way of the process such as Nam June Paik, David Hockney and Anton Corbijn.  I am aware of the work of many documentary filmmakers that have influenced my decision to create a multi-camera profile based around a band.  I will also need to venture passed my comfort zone into different styles of filmmaking that I am not perhaps familiar with in order to achieve a greater understanding.  I am also going to perform some primary research to see what people would want to see in a documentary.

I am going to use the different techniques that I have gained whilst shooting multi-camera studio sessions, but I am hoping to explore different editing techniques that I can use such as split screening, which is something that I want to use to show a contrast between different shots.  I will look into different shots that I can use to give my documentary more variety and style.  I intend to use a monitor to exhibit my work, as it is a piece of moving image.  The size of the monitor will also have an effect on my exhibit, but this is done to resources that are available.

Throughout the process of final major project I will document all my work on a blog and also in a sketchbook, which will include more annotations and notes.  I will use the blog and sketchbook to write about what I have done, problems I have faced, how I overcame them and also to evaluate my work.
